Doris Y. Baker, 83, of Kansas City, passed away on July 28, 2015 at Villa Ventura, Kansas City, MO, battling long term respiratory conditions and cancer for the third time.
She was born on November 7, 1931, in Leavenworth, KS to Adolph and Sylvia Reed. She attended Leavenworth schools, graduated from Leavenworth High School, and completed business courses at local colleges to supplement her career.
She married Melvin Younger in November 1951, who experienced an early death in January 1974. In May 1976 Doris married Roy E. Baker, spending 32 loving years together before his death in June 2008.
Doris was employed by Hallmark of Leavenworth as an accountant and soon transferred to the home office in Kansas City, MO. After 40 years she retired in 1990.
Doris became a born again Christian at age 9, was baptized in a local creek, and has been a life-long Nazarene supporting and contributing to many church activities through-out the years as health allowed. She was an extraordinary entertainer in hosting friends, family and Bible study groups in her home. She will always be remembered for her love, kindness, sensitivity, and support, especially for those in need. She loved God's creation of flowers, trees, scenic views and changing seasons, and enjoyed travel in her retirement years.
Doris loved family, having no children for her own she held dearly her siblings, step-children and step-grandchildren. She is the eldest in the family of nine, preceding her in death were her parents, husbands and siblings Edna L. Reed and Richard A. Reed. Surviving siblings are: Betty Housworth, Los Angeles, CA; Jean Long and Edward Reed, Leavenworth, KS; Leonard Reed, Lansing, KS; Ernest Reed, Basehor, KS; and Rita Malotte, Leavenworth, KS. Surviving step-children are: Larry Younger, Lincoln, NE and Susan Krewer, Warren, MI. Surviving step-grandchildren: Erick Younger and Sabina Kudson, Lincoln, NE; Abagail Krewer and Steven Krewer, Warren, MI.
The funeral service will be held at Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene, 11811 State Line Rd, Kansas City, MO. Viewing from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Friday, July 31, with the eulogy proceeding, followed with interment at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO.

John Blume - LHS Class of 1957
John Joseph Blume. 77, of Leavenworth, died, Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on Jan. 23, 1938, in Leavenworth, Kan., the son of John and Adelia (Miller) Blume.He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1957. After high school, John joined the United States Army Reserves from 1958 to 1964. He also worked at the Leavenworth Times, the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and Bell Hall Library before retiring in 2005.
John married Catherine “Kitty” Blume on April 11, 1964. After 25 years of marriage, John and Kitty divorced, but remained good friends and support to one another, sharing holidays and family activities. From that marriage, John is survived by two daughters, Mary (David) Moss of Parkville, Mo., and Michelle (Kevin) Manning of Topeka, Kan.; three grandchildren, Nicole Moss, Ashley Moss and Harlow Manning; and a sister, Lorraine Blanford of Evansville, Ind.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Buick Club.
John always enjoyed working the annual dinners at St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Catholic Churches. He was very handy, mechanical and crafty. He could see the value in repurposing and repairing many discarded items. His favorite motto was “One man’s trash is another’s treasure”. John loved working on his Ford Model A Roadster as a young adult. He was also a certified scuba diver, he took diving trips to Bonaire, Belize and Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the loving care provided to John by the Twin Oaks Staff and Crossroads Hospice.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. with the rosary prayed at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Veteran’s, Alzheimer’s Foundation or St. Joseph Catholic Church .

Lawrence Schlonga
Lawrence L. Schlonga, 92, Easton, Kansas passed away Thursday, July 8, 2015 at Country Care in Easton, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Lee Faber Schlonga (LHS Class of 1952). He owned and operated K & L Body Shop in Leavenworth, Kansas. After his retirement he loved to farm, raise cows and go to the Casinos. He leaves behind Terry and Jim Bogner, Tana Mayhugh, Keith and Paula Schlonga, Henry Schlonga, Cheryl Myers, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 11, 2015 at St. Casimir Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lansing, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Casimir Church. Arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Chapel. Mary Lee Schlonga, 78, of Easton, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at her home. She was born Oct. 27, 1933, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Fitch) Faber.She graduated from Leavenworth High School. On Sept. 20, 1952, she married Lawrence L. Schlonga at St. Joseph Church in Leavenworth. He survives at the home. She is also survived by her two daughters, Terry Lynn (Jim) Bogner and Tana Marie (Don) Mayhugh; her two sons, Keith (Paula) Schlonga and Henry (Cheryl Myers) Schlonga; her grandchildren, Jason Bogner, Justin Bogner, Kyle Doelz, Melinda Schlonga, Megan Schlonga, Dana Schlonga and Jennifer Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Lyla, Lydia, Nathan, Alexis, Christian, Noah, Kalub and Carson; and three nieces, Judy Curnutt, Jackie Burd and Christine Holman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dolores Phillips (LHS Class of 1948).
Shortly after she married Lawrence they moved to California where they lived for 13 years before returning to Leavenworth in 1968. Mary worked side-by-side with her husband Lawrence keeping the books for their businesses, Coffey Wrecker Service, K&L Auto Body Shop and they owned and maintained rental properties. She was a long-time member of the Leavenworth Chapter of TOPS and looked forward to their weekly meetings. Her family especially looked forward to her homemade noodles. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

On this day in 1956, it took Elvis Presley 31 takes to get just the right version of "Hound Dog" on acetate. This was the first time the Jordanaires worked with Presley. The record became the most successful two-sided hit on Billboard’s Top/Hot 100 chart. The two titles spent a combined 55 weeks in the Top 100 in 1956-1957.
