Lynnford Ray Godfrey was called to the church triumphant from his home on April 5, 2007.
Ray was born July 10, 1937, in Leavenworth to Lynnford and Naomi (Brown) Godfrey. Ray graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1955 and later joined the U.S. Navy.
After his Navy service, Ray began what would become his career with the Bureau of Federal Prisons, retiring in 1994 from the U.S. Penitentiary.
Ray will be remembered as a big man with a gentle heart and soft voice. He will be remembered for quick wit, corny jokes and pranks, and the ability to be a best friend no matter if you are 8 years old or 80. Ray had diversified interests, including hunting, science fiction, various collections and genealogy. Ray was a lifetime Lutheran and an eternal Christian.
Ray married twice, first to Judy Renk and they had four children, Rebecca McGlynn (John) of New Jersey; Sarilu Mettlen of Texas; Mark Godfrey (Sue) of New Jersey; and James Godfrey (Janice) of New Jersey. Ray was also blessed with a daughter, Peggy Clements Vannatla of Alaska. In 1974, Ray married his final life mate, Ruth Rudolph Williams and came to have four step-children, Ruth Chmidling (Mike) of Leavenworth, Sharon Blankenship (Mike) of Lansing, Scott Williams (Vicky) of Leavenworth and Chuck Williams (Roseann) of Arizona. Ray is also survived by two brothers, Joe Godfrey and Ed Godfrey (June), 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ray was preceded in death by a sister, Sarilu Godfrey; his wife Ruth; his parents, Lynnford and Naomi; his brother, Paul; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy. Ray is sadly missed by those who knew him.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the funeral chapel. Interment will follow at the Mount Muncie Cemetery.
