Mass of the Resurrection for Jane Marie Holliman, 75, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Leavenworth. Inurnment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Mrs. Holliman passed away Friday, June 1, 2007, at the University of Kansas Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Jane, the daughter of Charles A. and Regina (Thayer) Schindling, was born Sept. 24, 1931, in Leavenworth. She graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1949. Jane earned her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1953, and completed her master's degree through Emporia State University in 1979. Jane married Chester Neil Holliman on June 13, 1953, in Leavenworth.
Mrs. Holliman taught abroad in England, and later began teaching and coaching for the Leavenworth school district in 1976. She enjoyed coaching various sports throughout her career including basketball, volleyball, track and swim team. After a wonderful career, she retired from the Leavenworth school district in 1992. In keeping with her passion, Jane went on to teach at the Kansas City Kansas Community College, Leavenworth campus, and in the KCKCC Nursing Program.
After concluding her formal teaching career, Jane and her loving husband, Neil, retired to Henderson, Nev., where Jane was president of LaMancha II Homeowner's Association and volunteered at the St. Rose Dominican Hospital. She competed in the 2005 Senior Olympics, where she earned the Gold Medal in both the backstroke and freestyle swim. (Go Mom!!!)
After 50 years of friendship and loving marriage, Jane's husband and best friend Neil, preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 2003.
Jane moved to Lawrence, Kan., in 2006 and became a member of the New Generations Society, the Alvamar Country Club and also spent time volunteering at the University of Kansas Lied Center. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister.
Jane maintained her lifelong passion for swimming by starting the Leavenworth High School swim team, as well as the Leavenworth Country Club swim team. Jane was always involved with her children’s activities including Girl Scout leader for her daughters for many years. She also enjoyed tennis, snow skiing and playing competitive bridge. She was a world traveler, life educator and continued to yearn for knowledge her entire life. She shared that knowledge with all of us throughout our time with her.
Surviving family members include four daughters, Deborah J. Henderson, Lansing, Sue N. Moore and husband Tim, Leavenworth, Mary E. Vanderpool and husband Dennis, Shawnee, Kan., and Linda K. Wheatley and husband Ed, Lawrence; a son, Dave Holliman and wife Michele, Frisco, Texas; a brother, Robert Schindling, Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Joan Cook, Leavenworth; and 11 grandchildren, Ali, Aubrey, Ryan, Brad, Shelby, Kaila, Austin, Kati, Thomas, Chandler and Cierra.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Richard Schindling.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Belden-Larkin Funeral Home, Leavenworth. A rosary will commence at 7:30 p.m.
