TO: CLASSMATES AND SPOUSES OF THE LHS CLASS OF 1952
55TH REUNION
--------------------
The 55th reunion of the class of 1952 is now history. We had 3 days filled with renewing friendships, memories and good food.
There were 65 attending some or all of the events. Of the 65, 40 were classmates.Bonnie Freelong Long and her 2 guests had to cancel due to the hurricane that blew through Texas. We hope all is well there with you, Bonnie.
Friday evening, at the Carousel Museum, the program was presented by Ty Tyler. Music was provided by Cora Chambers Fisher and Dwight Gillespie. The Toon Shop provided a piano for the evening.
Ty's daughter is Editor of Southern Living Magazine and she created an appetizer especially for the class of '52. They were served hot from the oven during the evening. The recipe was available for those interested.
Here's a sample of some interesting facts, accomplishments, experiences and funny events that classmates shared Friday evening:
Carol Fluharty Simpson related how she and husband, Bob, were in Egypt visiting when a man on a camel approached Bob. He asked if Carol was for sale and offered to buy her for $250. Needless to say, Bob declined and he and Carol are still together.
We also learned that Dwight Gillespie was in basic training with ELVIS.
Anyone able and interested climbed aboard the carousel and enjoyed a rousing spin. Instead of "reaching for the brass ring," we reached for gift bags provided by and handed out by Ty Tyler.
Saturday morning golf was enjoyed by 4 players: Fred Murawski, Ty Tyler, Albert Aldridge and Dick Kopp. Joane Manney Wyrick and I went along as "handlers". We kept score and provided coffee as the weather was crisp. The players needed handlers as they became lost and skipped 2 holes when we went for coffee.
Saturday evening the dinner was held at the Leavenworth Country Club. The tables looked festive decorated by Ann Kelly Steele and Carol Fluharty Simpson with our school colors of blue and white.
Joan and Bob Atwell presided over a very moving memorial to our deceased classmates.
Dwight Gillespie was our MC for the evening. He introduced Clara Flint VanderStaay, who read the senior's "Last Will and Testament" from our school paper The Patriot, dated May 23, 1952. Those in attendance were reminded of what we told the reporter back then. We laughed at our naïveté.
As we were getting ready for our class picture, the photographer asked any of the men that were willing and/or "able" to please sit on the floor in front of the first row. Some of those getting down, remarked as to whether they could get back up. That will explain the smiles on everyone's face.
Ellen Cornett Tyson, along with a committee, sought out a band called "The Old Smoothies" to play our kind of music at the end of the evening. Everyone enjoyed the music and danced.
On Sunday morning the breakfast buffet was a time to relax and bid farewell one more time.
Classmates came from 7 states: Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas and Kentucky.
We want to thank all those who sent money to help support our reunion: Doug and Jean Curtis, Jim Oliver, Ty Tyler, Liz Moran Loweth, Clara Flint VanderStaay, Shirley Reubhausen, Ed Wittmis, Teddy Gordon Adams, Joan and Bob Atwell, Beau Kansteiner, Charlene Redford Jarlsberg, Phyllis Ray Dawson Cobb, Ellen Cornett Tyson, Ned Cross, Donna Seeley Chapman, JoAnn Zink Hofstra, Joane Manney Wyrick, Charlie Hall, Howard Moore, Ann Kunkle Turney and Joe Wallace.Classmate News:
The Class of '52 had 178 graduates. We have been unable to locate 15. There are 43 known deceased. Newsletters go out to 120 classmates.
Ned Cross was unable to attend, but sent news that the reunion dates fell on the expected date of their first grandchild. They have also been dealing with being displaced due to a garage fire. We hope the grandchild has arrived and Ned and family are back in their home.
Phyllis Dawson Cobb has lived in Pennsylvania most of her married life. She refers to herself as a not-so-serious stone carver. She and her husband also show dogs and one of their pugs went to Westminster. Phyllis is working with an editor on a collection of her poems. She has had some of her short stories published. She met her husband at Park, misses Kansas and returns periodically as she still has a farm here. A very busy lady.
Robert Schonherr sent a hello to all classmates and expressed the hope that those able to attend would have a toast to those not there.

Let's hear from YOU! Much was said about a reunion in 5 years. We have funds to have one. Are you interested?
Also, do you want the newsletter continued? If so, we need "news". Let us know with an e-mail to agabda@sbcglobal.net
THERE ARE MANY THINGS IN LIFE THAT WILL CATCH YOUR EYE, BUT ONLY A FEW WILL CATCH YOUR HEART - PURSUE THOSE!
(Here are some anonymous quotes concerning the reunion collected by The Old Man:
“To me it was the best reunion we have had. People mixed like they never had before. Our age may have had something to do with it."
"A real nice meal. Enough for now, more another time."
" I never laughed so hard as I did that whole weekend."
"HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!")
