John Powers - LHS Class of 1959

John Gary Powers, 69, of Leavenworth, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at his home.
 He was born Nov. 17, 1941, in Pittsburg, Kan., the son of Clifford Earl and Mary Eileen (Hassett) Powers.
 He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, two years at Immaculata High School and graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1959.
 After graduation John was employed by Union Pacific Railroad Co. as a telegraph operator/ depot agent. In 1964 he resigned to accept a position with the Bureau of Prisons at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth. During his career with the prison he transferred ten times returning to Leavenworth three times. He retired in 1989 as a prison system controller. After retirement he owned and operated private clubs in Leavenworth and was self employed as an income tax preparer with Jost Personal Tax Service.
 In June 1960, he married Connie R. White. They had seven children. They divorced in 1978. In July 1979, he married Mary Patricia (McCune) Fleshman LHS Class of 1964). She preceded him in death in January 2006. He was also preceded in death by a son, John Gary Powers, Jr.
 John is survived by his children, Jeffrey Dennis Powers of Farmville, Va., Brigette Renee Powers of Hurst, Texas, Tracy Rae (Dave) Sumpolec of Spotslyvania, Va., Jamie Odas (Martha) Powers of Paradise, Texas, Presley Ann Villegas of North Richland Hills, Texas, Jade Garrett (Stephanie) Powers of Arlington, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and a step-son, William E. Fleshman II.
 He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, BPOE (Elks), Knights of Columbus, AARP, Federal Prison Retiree Association, and AAA.
 Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at the funeral home with Rev. Phillip Winkelbauer as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
