Sue Bogner - LHS Class of 1955

Marilyn Sue Bogner, 79, Chief Scientist of the Institute for the Study of Human Error, LLC, passed away at her home in Bethesda on August 19, 2016.
Sue had a number of passions, to including the arts, world travel and learning about other cultures, nature, antiques, entertaining, and her dogs and cats.
A native of Leavenworth, Kansas, she attended the University Of Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in Psychology and Mathematics. She earned her M.A. in Psychology, and her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Kansas.
In 1958, Sue married Edward J. Chapman, Jr. (LHS Class of 1950) in Leavenworth, Kansas. They divorced in 1971. In 1977, She married Don Aufenkamp, Ph.D., in Bethesda. He preceeded her in death in 1989. 
Moving to the area in 1971, Sue taught at Catholic University. She continued applying psychology to medicine at the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine. Later, at the Food and Drug Administration, she analyzed reports that attributed death or serious injury involving medical devices to user error. In 1991, she organized a session on Medical Error at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting. From this grew her 1994 edited book, Human Error in Medicine and the creation of the Institute for the Study of Human Error, LLC where she gave talks, wrote book chapters, and articles on the growing study. In 2004, Misadventures in Health Care: Inside Stories, which she edited, was published.
Sue is survived by her son, Edward J. Chapman, III (Ann), Lansing, KS; daughter, Rebecca H. Sauter (John), Clemmons, NC; and grandsons, Edward J. Chapman, IV, and Jacob J. Chapman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
