Otto entered the National Guard and was called to serve in the Korean War while in high school. After graduation from Leavenworth High School, he worked for Missouri Valley until he was drafted into the United States Army.
Upon discharge from the Army, Otto worked in the graphic arts department at Fort Leavenworth. He later began his own building business, "Ruebhausen Construction Quality Built Homes". He continued building homes in Leavenworth until his retirement.
On June 7, 1953, Otto married Bonnie M. Wilber. She survives at the home. He is also survived by two daughters, Deborah Redford and husband David and Denise Hill, both of Leavenworth; a son, David Ruebhausen of Florence, Ala.; a sister, Shirley Ruebhausen (LHS Class of 1952); and seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Otto was preceded in death by a son Dennis Ruebhausen (wife Joyce), and two brothers Jerry Ruebhausen (LHS Class of 1959) (wife Patty) and Douglas Ruebhausen.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Otto loved sports. He played football for Leavenworth High School and baseball well into adulthood. He was recruited by the Chicago Cubs to try out for their organization. Otto was an avid bowler, winning state tournaments for the Eagles. He was also an avid KU fan.
Fishing was a big part of Otto's life. He was a founder of the Leavenworth Bass Club. He was a champion fisherman fishing with Bass Masters and BASS, representing the state of Kansas in the national championships.
He was a Boy Scout leader for many years taking his troop camping to Minnesota and Canada several times.
At 70 years old Otto joined the elite "Polar Bear Club" by swimming in the Arctic Ocean north of the Arctic Circle.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Muncie Cemetery.
