LTC (Ret) Billy Joe McAfee was born October, 1, 1928 in Byars, OK, the first of seven children to bless the lives of Violet Florence Rakestraw McAfee and Clarence Mayburn McAfee. LTC (Ret) Bill McAfee passed away on March 14, 2017 in Easton, KS.
In the 88 years between, he grew up in a large extended family surrounded by love, music and hard work; was one of five in his high school graduating class; was a US Army veteran of World War II, Korea, atomic testing-Nevada and Viet Nam, receiving numerous medals; the first of his family to graduate from college-St. Benedict’s, Atchison, KS; Loan Officer and Vice President, First National Bank-Leavenworth; Master of Fox Hounds-Ft. Leavenworth Hunt 1969-70 & 1973-74 and Lion’s Club President 1981-82, Leavenworth, KS.
He was also Past Master, Hiram Masonic Lodge #68, Leavenworth, KS; Past Master, Hancock Lodge #311, Ft. Leavenworth, KS; Potentate of the Abdallah Shrine Temple-Overland Park KS 1989; Royal Order of Jesters, Court 93-Overland Park, KS; 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason; National Sojourners, Chapter 154, Ft. Leavenworth, KS; Order of Eastern Star, Byington Chapter 177, Leavenworth, KS.
Bill and Maryann Stucker (LHS Class of 1954), a RN and Air Force Reserve officer, married on Valentine’s Day, 1970. After they both retired from military service and Bill from First National Bank, they spent decades travelling North America with Newmar RV groups and also occasional trips overseas. Bill was an avid golfer. He competed for 19 years in a row at the National Retired Military Golf Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years; children Patricia McAfee, Lee Loden (Mark) and Michael McAfee; brothers Glen McAfee (Charlotte), Jerry McAfee (Carolyn), Bobby McAfee (Laren); granddaughters Erin Behunin (Aaron), Nikki Burns (Chris), Ruby Loden; great-granddaughters Natalie, Shelby and Blake Raines and their father David; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins in a large and loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Donald (Dobber) McAfee and sisters Virginia (Ginger) McAfee Burnham and Katherine (Sue) McAfee Reddick Robertson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the following: Shriners Hospitals for Children in care of Abdallah Shrine Temple- 5300 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66202 or First United Methodist Church-422 Chestnut St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
Services are scheduled for Friday, March 24 at First United Methodist Church, Leavenworth with Visitation from 5-7pm, including a Masonic Service and Jesters Rose ceremony at 6pm, Memorial Service from 7-8pm.
Inurnment with full military honors will take place Friday, May 24 at 11am at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the inurnment should meet at Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS no later than 10:30am. The family wishes to acknowledge the timely, considerate care provided to Bill over many years by the staff of the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center. They are also very appreciative of the caring, compassionate staff at Country Care, Easton.
