Tillman L. Nester, 85, of Leavenworth, Kan. passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Twin Oaks Health & Rehab in Lansing, Kan. He was born March 25, 1931, in Fieldale, Va., the son of Harvey Wilson and Nancy (Puckett) Nester.
Tillman married Eileen VanVeghten in Leavenworth. She preceded him in death. He later married Carol Concannon Scott (LHS Class of 1951), she also preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter Michaelyn Resman, four brothers (Lloyd Nester, Raymond Nester, Marvin Nester, Fred Nester) and four sisters (Avis Adkins, Elva Lampkins, Ora Jarrett, Virginia Campbell).
He is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth (John) Resman of Olathe, Kan., Carla (Dale Bieber) Nester of Coralville, Iowa, Karen (Chris Cataldi) Nester of Fredricksburg, Va., Paula Stafford of Leavenworth: two sons David (Michelle) Nester of Leavenworth, Michael Nester of Olathe, Kan.; 15 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Tillman worked for the Fieldale police department after his service in the Air Force. He then went on to be a firefighter at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he was promoted to Fire Chief. He transferred to Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, Ariz. as Fire Chief. He retired April 1, 1981.
He loved to travel and to be outdoors.
A memorial visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to Smile Train Foundation or the American Heart Association.
