John Fredrick Sloop, 81, of Winchester, passed away peacefully at his home on November 11, 2017.
He was born April 29, 1936 in the Boyle community of rural Valley Falls, the son of Homer Joseph and Mae Rose Reichart Sloop.
John was a 1954 graduate of Winchester High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving two years, 1955 to 1957, before returning to Winchester to fulfill his passion for farming. He was a tender-hearted farmer who enjoyed row crop farming, raising cattle and buffalo, as well as performing conservation and ground improvement, including buying and selling real estate.
He loved life and all it’s beauty. He created many fond memories in the mountains with family. He climbed and coached others to climb Longs Peak and several other mountains in the Rocky Mountain National Park. He was a health advocate and at the age of 81, walked three miles a day and was known to run the stairs at the High School stadium.
John was a member of the Winchester United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Joseph and Mae “Rose” Sloop; two brothers, Homer LeRoy Sloop and Edward Dean Sloop; and two step-sisters, Beth Freeman and Alice Berry.
John is survived by a life-long friend, Juanita Jones, Winchester; one sister, Florence Larkin, Leavenworth; 10 nieces, four nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews with whom he shared his love of horseback riding and mountain climbing.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, at Winchester United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 AM, prior to the service. Inurnment will be at the Nortonville Cemetery at a later date.
John was a devoted Christian who has been called to his eternal home and reunited with family and friends. He will be missed, but we are grateful he remained independent until Jesus called him home. He was a simple man, therefore in lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials in his name be sent to the Winchester United Methodist Church in care of the Barnett Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 602, Oskaloosa, KS, 66066.
