Donald Dwain Dodd, 84, Leavenworth, died, Friday, Jan. 4, 2019. He was born March 2, 1934, in Leavenworth, the son of Theodore and Anna (Finneran) Dodd.
Donald grew up in Leavenworth County attending Sacred Heart and Bell grade schools. He worked for many neighboring farm families during his early teen years. After earning a welding degree, Donald worked at the Missouri Valley Ship Yards in Leavenworth before entering the U.S. Navy at the age of 19. Upon enlisting he enjoyed many ports of call while serving as a welder on the USS Roanoke for four years. After his honorable discharge he worked as a welder for various companies in western Kansas and eastern Colorado.
In Sept. 1958, Donald married June Nuss Foster. For many years they operated a foster home in Riverside, California, and Wilson, Kansas, caring for many babies and small children, three of which they adopted.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, June, in 2009. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jenny Dodd-Conner; a step-daughter, Patricia Elton; three sisters, Dorothy Bemis, Florence Haling and Helen Marie Dodd; and four brothers, Theodore, Charles, Lloyd and Raymond Dodd.
He is survived by a daughter, KiAnn Caprice Dodd; a son, Roby Dodd; a step-son, Steve Foster; four sisters, Jeanette Zielinski, Margaret Long, Alice Schneider and Delores (Joe) Urban; a sister-in-law, Judy Dodd; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation beginning with the rosary will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Church, with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm. as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
