The Council on Aging in Leavenworth is hoping to help residents clean those hard-to-reach spots.
With brooms and mops in hand, the council recently initiated its Homemaker Program to help seniors with basic housekeeping tasks. Patty Willmeth, director of the Council, said the program has been a success so far. “It’s been very positively received,” she said.
The program has strict guidelines for what the homemaker is allowed to do. The homeowner must be at home when the homemaker arrives, and the homemaker cannot have a key. In addition, the services are only available when the Council on Aging office is open.
Greta Smith Inkman (LHS Class of 1950), 76, of Leavenworth recently started using the service. She said that her husband passed away in December, and the service has given her a chance to do other things instead of staying at home and keeping up with the housework.
“Instead of cleaning, I thought I’d treat myself,” she said.
Inkman said she is now able to get out of the house more and use the time she doesn’t need to spend cleaning. But all those social activities can be taxing too.
“I’s still really busy,” she said, noting the difference in the things she does now as opposed to before.
The homemaker currently assists in vacuuming, dusting, mopping, taking out the trash and general cleaning.
Anyone interested in using the service can call the Council on Aging at 684-0777.
