He was born on October 25, 1931 in Hattiesburg, Miss., to the late Leon and Mildred (Schroeder) Patterson.
He graduated from Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1949. He received his BA degree from the University of Kansas in 1954, his MA degree from Penn State in 1961, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1968.
He studied in France as a Fulbright Scholar from 1954 to 1955 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

He proudly served his country in the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant from 1955 to 1957. He taught Junior and Senior High School in San Antonio before becoming a professor at Texas Tech. He was a language professor at Texas Tech for 37 years, retiring in 1998. He was an avid tennis player, and played the piano and saxophone.
Bill was a thoughtful and caring son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He had a sardonic wit that complemented his uncanny storytelling abilities. He was an excellent professor and was considered a mentor and loved by many students. He will be missed terribly by those who loved him and knew him. Texas Tech would like to start a Study Abroad Scholarship in his honor.
Survivors include a sister, Sherry Carney of Stockton, Calif.; two nephews, Kevin Carney of Livermore, Calif., and Brian Carney of Stockton, Calif.; two cousins, Patsy Smith of Bainbridge, Ga., and Vicki Buck of Vernon, Texas; and Joshua "Al" Mora, of Lubbock, a loyal friend who cared for and remained with him to the end.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Resthaven Memorial Park, officiated by Chaplain Les Jackson. Visitation will be come and go all day Friday.
