Don Walkenbach - LHS Class of 1953

Donald F. Walkenbach, 75, of Leavenworth, died unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, while working at Fort Leavenworth.
He was born June 29, 1933, in Leavenworth, the son of Fredrick C. and Clara (Monroe) Walkenbach. His mother died when he was very young and he was raised by his father and Mildred E. Walkenbach.
He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1953. He then served for two years in the U.S. Army.
On Aug. 29, 1955, he married Dixie L. Porter  in Leavenworth. She survives at the home. He is also survived by his two daughters, Debbie (Rodney) Day of Leavenworth and Donna (James) Patroske of Leavenworth; his grandchildren, Chase Day and Johnathon Patroske; his two sisters, Helen Boyd and Blanch Goodrow; a brother,
Fritzie Walkenbach (LHS Class of 1967); and several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Hubbard; and a brother, William Pastore.
Don was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church. He was a loving husband for 53 years and a wonderful father. He was an avid bowler for 55 years. Don enjoyed watching all sports and especially spending time with his family. He was a life-long member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He worked as a painter in Leavenworth most of his life.
Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, www.leintzfh.com. The rosary was prayed at 3 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Immaculata High School.
