Christopher Young Jr., 73, of Leavenworth, died Monday, May 25, 2009, in his wife’s arms. He was born June 6, 1935, in Leavenworth, the son of Christopher and Wanda (Baker) Young Sr.
He served in the U.S. Air Force. After discharge he married Sylvia Lange (LHS Class of 1955) in Leavenworth on July 7, 1958. They celebrated fifty years of marriage last July. Christopher is survived by his wife Sylvia of the home; his children, Harris Thomas of O’Fallon, Mo., Vikki (Nathaniel) Friends of Kansas City, Mo., Lisa (Ganzy) Ingram of Kansas City, Mo., Kimberly Hall of Leavenworth and Jeffrey (Angela) Young of Shawnee, Kan.; a former daughter in-law, JoVonna Thomas; a brother, George E. Young; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Christopher was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Maurice Young.
He retired from Munson Army Hospital in 1993 and then spent several years working as the operations manager for a large local ministry. He has since volunteered in the prison ministry. He was an avid golfer, but most importantly a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a friend, who touched the lives of many. Christopher was a member of Sheffield Family Life Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2009, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 1, at Sheffield Family Life Center. Burial with military honors will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
