Jacob (Jake) S. Defrees, Jr. 84, of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away July 10, 2010, surrounded by his family.
Jake was born May 14, 1926 in Atchison, KS to the late Jacob Sr. and Florence (Jeffries) Defrees. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joy (Owens) Defrees; his daughter Trudy (Malin) Holyfield; his sons Tim (Mary) Defrees and Jacob III (LindaLee) Defrees; and his sister Ethel P. Sedlock. He loved and enjoyed his eight grandkids and 17 great-grandkids.
He was a carpenter and an estimator for 42 years at Kaaz Construction.
After his retirement he enjoyed woodworking in his shop up to his last day. He was a member of the Lions Club for 41 years, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He loved attending and serving at the First United Methodist Church for 82 years.
Jake’s visitation will be Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from noon to 1:30 p.m., with his service to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Fifth and Chestnut, Leavenworth, Kan.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Davis Funeral Chapel.
The Old Man remembers when Jake Defrees (LHS Class of 1944) was his Boy Scout Scoutmaster back in the 1940s. The troop met in the basement of the First Baptist Church on the corner of 7th and Olive. He also remembers Summer camp with Jake at Camp Naish near Bonner Springs.
