Robert Scott (Bob) James died on January 30, 2012 at the age of 75, surrounded by family and friends at his home in Westwood Hills, Kansas.
Born on December 14, 1936, Bob grew up in Topeka and Leavenworth, Kansas. He attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1958, and later attended University of Missouri, Columbia, earning a Master of Science degree in construction management in 1968. Bob then enjoyed a productive and fulfilling 47 year career as a civil engineer, working on projects all around the world as well as in Kansas City. He started out working with the Federal Aviation Administration, and then with the Kivett and Myers architectural firm. He then was a founder and partner of Devine James Labinski Myers architectural firm, and finally worked at BNIM Architects before retiring in 2006.
Bob enjoyed spending time at the family cabin, traveled extensively, and was an avid reader with a passion for Civil War history. He enjoyed good food, the company of family and friends, and telling a great story. But above all else, he was a devoted friend and loving family man.
He is survived by his companion Patricia L. Hogan, and was preceded in death by his wife Janice Carmichael-James. He is survived by his sons, Adam and Bryan James; step-sons Quinn and Patrick Carmichael; six grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jack James (LHS Class of 1957) and his family.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held on February 8, 2012 from 4-7PM at The Simpson House, 4509 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO. The tribute will begin at 5PM. The family encourages donations to charitable organizations in lieu of flowers. Bob was a supporter of local food banks as well as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
