Their name is Dougherty. And Ellen Jackson Dougherty was the first among them to achieve academic excellence at Leavenworth High School and the first recipient in her family to receive a Les Novelettes scholarship back in 1955. She attended Emporia State Teacher’s College, majoring in Business Administration and later went on to fully commit all of her physical and mental vigor to her growing family and to her career as a Personnel Staffing Specialist at Fort Leavenworth.
Ellen and her husband Retired Brig. Gen. Alonzo "Lonnie" Dougherty raised six children, Kenneth, Neil, Michael, twins: Larry and Lisa and Kelly as well as providing a home and family for two other children. Interspersed with family obligations, Ellen served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, coached several City recreation championship girls basketball and softball teams and worked several years with girls AAU basketball teams. She enjoyed many years of service in the Leavenworth School System volunteering with PTA, Leavenworth High School Booster Club and Friends of Leavenworth High School Organization. Ellen proudly says that her “ blood runs Pioneer Blue!” She also was a member of the Leavenworth Recreation and Parks committee and the Riverfront Community Center committee that was instrumental in the creation of the multi-use facility as it stands today.
Ellen has received many honors and accolades from both the military and civilian communities. Among them was the TRADOC Excellence Award as coordinator for the Federal Junior Fellowship Program for Fort Leavenworth which she established in 1981. Upon retirement in 1996, she received the Commanders Award for Civilian Service and recognition from many organizations that she was proud to serve. Also, the Dougherty family was selected as the Fort Leavenworth and USATRADOC Great American Family. Ellen comments that family gatherings are joyous occasions filled with the playful antics of her children and the youthful exuberance of 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Inspired by the accomplishments of their predecessors, the legacy of their family name served as a source of purpose and guidance in the upbringing of their six children. Both Ellen and Lonnie were raised by parents with strong family values and they in turn instilled these same values in their children.
Ellen said that throughout their childhood, her children understood that discipline problems were not an option and that striving for excellence in all of their endeavors was an expectation. As a result, the Dougherty siblings were outstanding in both academics and sports.
Lisa Marie Dougherty, a graduate of Leavenworth High School, was a Les Novelettes scholarship recipient in 1984.
She attended KU where she earned a B.A. in Human Biology in 1988 and received an M.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1990. She became a certified Watsu practitioner which is a specialized water technique that facilitates significant rehabilitative progress in patients who suffer from chronic pain.
Dr. Dougherty co-authored a chapter entitled “Rehabilitative Benefits of Watsu” from the publication “Watsu-Freeing the Body in Water.” She is not only a doctorate-degreed physical therapist, but also a licensed Massage Therapist and a certified Strength and Conditioning Instructor. Among her areas of expertise are Myofascial Release Technique, CranioSacral Therapy, Sport Specific Training and Personal Training. Dr. Dougherty’s practice Elite Wellness, located in Georgia, addresses relief from chronic pain and many debilitating conditions through a series of rehabilitating methods.
Her athletic background, which more than likely influenced her career choice, included four years of NCAA basketball at KU where she is a member of the 1,000 points scored club. Her exceptional physical shape attests to the successful completion of many endurance challenges.
Lisa is well suited to helping others achieve their goals which is reflected in her business motto: Maximizing Wellness — Body, Mind and Spirit.
Another sibling, Lawrence David "Larry" Dougherty, not to be outdone by his twin sister, also received a Les Novelettes scholarship in 1984. While at Leavenworth High, he played Pioneer basketball and was team captain his senior year and still holds the record for shooting 47 consecutive freethrows. After High School, Larry played basketball for Valparaiso University. In 1985 , he played basketball for Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. and went on to earn a degree in Business Management. From 1989 to 1991, he coached basketball at Texas A&I University. For several years thereafter, his career included a position as coordinator for the Oklahoma City Alternative Education School for Dysfunctional Juvenile Delinquents. He also managed franchised restaurants. Larry currently owns and operates L&L Catering Food Service and also owns and operates Goodfellows Lounge and Bar Restaurant in Oklahoma City, Okla. He and his wife, Tanja, have two daughters, Payton,12 and Mya, 10.
Continuing in the Dougherty tradition of academic excellence, Kelly (Dougherty) Stallworth was awarded her Les Novelettes scholarship in 1990. She also was an outstanding athlete in the basketball arena earning many accolades while at Leavenworth High School.
Kelly attended Stanford University from 1990-1992 and was a member of the NCAA Final Four Womens Basketball Team that claimed the National Championship in 1992. From 1992-1995, Kelly brought her winning ways to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where she became a member of the NCAA Final Four women’s basketball team and where she graduated with a B.A. in Human and Organizational Development.
Kelly remained at Vanderbilt as an assistant coach where she helped her alma mater get to the Sweet 16 during the 96-97 season.
In 2009, Kelly earned a Masters Degree from Piedmont College and currently teaches fourth grade along with coaching AAU basketball and has created a business that is dedicated to educating the youth of this country through specialized tutoring and fitness programs. Kelly lives in Lawrenceville, Ga. with her husband Jay and two daughters, Jordan, 13 and Jaron, 11.
It is apparent that all six of the Dougherty siblings have brought, and will continue to bring something special to this family dynamic as they model their legacy of a deep abiding love for family values.
