General Dougherty entered the military on May 12, 1955, where he enlisted in Company A, 174th Military Police Battalion, Kansas Army National Guard. By February 1959, he advanced to the rank of Sergeant when his unit was reorganized as Infantry. In June 1962, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He continued his career advancing to Captain in February 1968. In May 1968, with the mobilization of the 69th Infantry Brigade, he reported to the Republic of Vietnam, where he served with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry 199th Brigade; commanding D Company and later as S-3 Air for the same Battalion. Upon returning from his tour in Vietnam, he was assigned to various positions within the Kansas Army National Guard which included Company Commander, Battalion and Brigade Staff Officer positions. He was promoted to Major in May 1973, left the 69th Infantry Brigade to serve on state Headquarters Staff as Equal Opportunity Officer and later as Assistant G-3. He was promoted to LTC in May 1977 still serving as Assistant G-3. He assumed Command of the 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry where he served until December 1981, was promoted to Colonel and served as the Assistant G-3 in the State Area Command Headquarters (STARC) until September 1983. In November 1984 he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General (BG) and became the first graduate of the Kansas Army National Guard Candidate School Program to attain the rank of General Officer. In November 1985, he assumed the duties of Assistant Commander of the 35th Infantry Division at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., where he remained until his retirement in September 1987 after 32 years of service.
General Dougherty has always had a two-track career (both military and civil service). He retired from Competitive Civil Service in May 1988 where he served as a Management Analyst with the Combined Arms Combat Development Activity. His third career was that of real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Reilly & Sons until he retired in July 2009. He was also very active within the Leavenworth community, serving on the Leavenworth School Board, President of the Leavenworth Board of Realtors; The Kansas Governor’s Board of Directors for the 125th birthday celebration of Kansas statehood as well as 15 years as a youth basketball, baseball and football coach. He was an essential part of the plan in executing and dedication of the Buffalo Soldier Monument in 1992. He was inducted into the Kansas Army National Guard Hall of Fame in November 1993. He was also inducted into the Kansas Army National Guard Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame in September 2003.
General Dougherty leaves behind a loving family including wife Ellen Jackson Dougherty (LHS Class of 1955) of the home; son Kenneth (Mary) of Leavenworth; son Michael (Adrienne) of Leavenworth; son Larry (Tanja) of Yukon, Okla.; daughter Lisa of Snellville, Ga.; daughter Kelly Stallworth (Jay) of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Trent Richardson of Leavenworth; daughter-in-law Patti Dougherty of Fort Worth, Texas; brother Patrick (Pearlie) Dougherty (IMAC Class of 1964) of Memphis, Tenn.: grandchildren Megan Murry (Nile) with three great-grandchildren Mykel, Maddox and Myles; Neil Patrick (Mallory); Ryan (Abby); Jeffery, Brandon, Tony, Colin, Payton and Mya Dougherty, Jordan and Jaron Stallworth; honorary grandchildren, Xavier and Christopher Young; sisters-in-law, Emma and Dollie Dougherty; very special aunt Matilda Chase and very special friends Paul (Sandy) Bates of Bella Vista, Ark., as well as host of other close relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Sr., and Frankie Dougherty; brothers Bobbie (IMAC Class of 1956) and William Dougherty (IMAC Class 0f 1962) and son Neil.
The Dougherty family epitomized the meaning of family earning them the distinct honor of “The Great American Family.”
Visitation will begin at noon Friday, June 6, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the church, with Rev. Phillip Winkelbauer as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
