Walter Edward Ringel, 82, died late Thursday, September 18, 2014 at St. Luke's North Hospital after a defiant fight with a prolonged illness.
Walt was born in Leavenworth on March 15, 1932, the only child of Walter and Grace Ringel. He was a proud lifelong resident of Leavenworth, with the exception of a stint with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. It was during his military service he met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Powers. They were married on October 10, 1952. She survives him at the home.
A proud parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent, Walt is also survived by his three children, Steve, Barb (Chris), and Mike (Beth), as well as his seven grandchildren, Brandon, Matt, Amanda, Steven, Madeline, Lauren, and Aaron, and two great-grandchildren (with one on the way).
Walt was a graduate of Leavenworth High School (Class of 1950), as well as having briefly attended the University of Kansas. He was a mainstay of countless overlapping scenes in Leavenworth. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Leavenworth Country Club. Walt also bowled in the Masonic League at Skyway Lanes for many years. His other passion, of course, was fishing. Walt loved nothing more than getting his bass boat out on the lake at every opportunity.
Over the course of his very vibrant life, he was involved in nearly everything; he was a member of Kiwanis, as well has having been a past Exalted Ruler of the Leavenworth BPOE 661.
Though he never “officially retired,” he had worked for over 30 years selling paper supplies for Leavenworth Paper & Office Supply, the latest in a long list of businesses and organizations upon which he left an indelible mark.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2014, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Mass Of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, September 24, 2014 in the Immaculata Conception Church at 9:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
The family requests any memorial donations in Walt's name be made to a charity of your choosing.
Arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be left on Walters’s online guestbook at www.davisfuneralchapelinc.com.
