He is survived by his only child, Elizabeth Tyler Austin, of Birmingham, Alabama; his sister, Jay Tyler Betette, of Laurens, SC; and his brother, Marshall Tyler, of Hendersonville, NC. He was very proud of his beloved grandchildren, Anne Catherine and Tyler Luckett. Ty was a man of great love which extended to his step-children and step-grandchildren, Edward W. Bailey of John's Island, Anne B. Seymour and daughter Caroline of Mt. Pleasant, and Ralph Bailey, Jr. of Summerville and his children, Grace, and Ralph III.
Ty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and received his Masters in Business Administration from Tulane University. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps on Bikini Atoll and Eniwetok. Ty's service to his country included involvement with the testing and transportation of the hydrogen bomb.
A lifelong inventor, Ty discovered how to eliminate the metallic taste of soft drinks stored in cans resulting in a patented coating used in the manufacturing process. He perfected products commonly used by most people and businesses, including indoor-outdoor carpeting, washable wallpaper, and outdoor latex paint. Most recently he and his stepson, Edward W. Bailey, patented a process called Terrepure, a combination of filtration and oxidation that uses ultrasonic energy to purify distillate. The patent led to the formation of a company, Terressentia, in 2007. The Terrepure process of rapidly aging spirits received attention from local press but also received national attention. In 2012, an article was dedicated to the innovative process in Popular Science magazine. Terressentia liquors have been entered in six international competitions, winning a total of thirty medals.
Of all of his remarkable qualities, including his unflappable positive disposition, Ty's ability to capture a person's spirit in poetry stands out among all the others to those who knew him.
