Edward Jost Chapman, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Lansing, Kansas on May 10, 2018. He was born on July 30, 1932 in Dodge City, Kansas, the son of Edward Jost Chapman, Sr. and Anna Coonrinda Engel DeRidder.
Ed graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1950, and was known around Leavenworth County as “Chappie” and “Chap.” He was academically successful and known for his strong musical talent on the piano where he won numerous local and state awards. During his brief enlistment in the Air Force, Ed was stationed at the Western White House in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he played trombone in the Air Force band that performed for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Having seriously considered a career as a professional concert pianist, he instead enrolled at Columbia University. After his father’s death in 1957, Ed returned home and completed his education at the University of Kansas. In 1958, Ed married Marilyn Sue Bogner. They divorced in 1971. Ed married Lois (Anderson) Chapman on October 5, 1974 in Leavenworth, Kansas. She survives at the home.
Ed passed the Bars in Kansas and Missouri in 1959 and started his law practice that would continue for over 55 years. Ed was committed to the community where he practiced and lived. He served as Judge of City Court, Leavenworth County from 1961-1963. He was County Attorney from 1963-1967, and a member of the Kansas and American Bar Association.
In the community, Ed facilitated the transfer of the Carroll Mansion to The Leavenworth County Historical Society. He was also a member of the Board of Directors that helped create the new Leavenworth Library. He was a long-time member of the Leavenworth Kiwanis Club, Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce, King Solomon Lodge No. 10 A.F. and A.M., Leavenworth. His commitment to the Leavenworth and Lansing communities earned him recognition as the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2000.
He loved puns and humor; often times you could hear his raucous laugh. You could not help but smile with him.
Ed is survived by his wife, Lois (Anderson) Chapman; his children, Edward J. Chapman, III (Ann), Rebecca Sauter (John), and Lisa Walsh (Joe); and his grandchildren, Edward J. Chapman, IV, and Jacob J. Chapman. He is also survived by his faithful companion and pet, Kitty. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, David W. Chapman, Sr.(LHS Class of 1952).
