While in high school, she worked at the Fort Drive In, but the job she really enjoyed was working as a Candy Striper at Cushing Hospital. She would go on to pursue this interest later in life. While working at the hospital, she was given the name of a Marine stationed in Okinawa, to write to. He was from Easton, Kansas, and would be getting discharged soon.
They were married on Nov. 24, 1958, and had four children. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in August 1964. After raising her four children, she became a Certified Nurse’s Aide. She enjoyed this very much, and did this for over 25 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John A. Monahan, her son, Thomas P. Monahan, her parents, her sister, Margaret A. Thompson (LHS Class of 1960), her brother, James E. Welch (LHS Class of 1960).
Survivors include her son, John Monahan, Jr., daughters, Cynthia Hatfield (Richard) and Rose Clem (Andrew); grandchildren, Jennifer, Tiffany, Nicole, Danielle (Daniel), Remmington (Johanna) and six great-grandchildren, stepmother, Mary Welch, half-brother, Frank Welch (Nancy), half-sister, Virginia Dolinski (James) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St Joseph of the Valley Catholic Church, 31151 207th St, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048. Graveside service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions out to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

John A. Monahan, 80, Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Saturday, December 3rd, 2016, surrounded by family at North Kansas City Hospital.
He was born February 24th, 1936, to Edward and Katherine(Herklotz) Monahan, in Leavenworth, Kansas. He joined the United States Marine Corp in July of 1954, and rose to the rank of Sergeant. While in the service, he was given the name of a girl back home to write to. Once back home, he began dating and married her. John and Patricia Welch were married on November 24th, 1958. They had four children together, and moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and working on his house. Mr. Monahan was retired from Ford Motor Company and was a member of the UAW Local 249.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Patrick Monahan, his parents, his brothers, Edward Monahan Jr., Thomas (Pat) Monahan, James Monahan (John’s twin), and Michael Monahan, and sisters, Dorothy Wilson, Virginia Shell, and Charlotte Shelton.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, son John Monahan Jr., daughters Cynthia Monahan and Rose Clem, son-in-law Andrew Clem, grandchildren, Jennifer, Tiffany, Nicole, Danielle, Remmington, and six-great-grandchildren. John leaves behind six sisters, Mary Spinner, Julia Vallandingham, Helen Peery, Sharon Farr, Marguerite Rizzo, and one brother, Charles Monahan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Monahan was a member of the Missouri Cremation Service.
