Bernard (Barney) Lee Baragary, age 85, Boonville, Missouri, entered into eternal rest on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018.
Barney was born March 12, 1933 to Leo and Frances Baragary in Leavenworth, Kansas. He graduated Jarbalo High School, in Jarbalo, Kansas, in 1951, just a few months after marrying the love of his life, Janice Mason.
Barney made his living as a realtor, farmer, real estate developer, entrepreneur, auctioneer, and all-around deal maker. A direct result of one of those deals was his purchase of the Boonville Livestock Auction shortly after settling in Boonville in 1974.
He was a lifelong lover of horses and was at his happiest when he was on the trail with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He has instilled in all of his family an earnest work ethic, a commitment to sticking to your word, and to doing the right thing no matter what.
Barney gave his life to Alcoholics Anonymous at the age of 41. He lived the program, one day at a time, until his death. Barney helped people in central Missouri and beyond, with his story and sponsorship. He attended AA meetings at least once a day for decades and had a hand in creating chapters all of over central Missouri. He was instrumental in the development of Valley Hope in Boonville and served on the Hope Builders Board. In 1989, the Central Regional Advisory Council for Drug and Alcohol Abuse presented him with the Life Service Award.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, William, sisters, Mary Ann and Geraldine, and a brother, Leo. He is survived by one brother, Jody Baragary, of Tonganoxie, Kansas.
Barney is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Janice Baragary, of the home, and three children, Rita (Larry) Sanders, Boonville, Denise (Steve) Shelley, Lansing, Kansas, and Don (Joy) Baragary, Boonville. Surviving grandchildren are John (Tara) Sanders, Edgerton, Kansas, Kelly (Ryan) Smith, Boonville, Brandon (Shaquanda) Shelley, Lansing, Kansas, Dale (Jamee) Sanders, Boonville, Bryan (Afton) Shelley, Piper, Kansas, Chance (Mary Catherine) Baragary, Festus, and Whitney (Adam) Pedersen, Storm Lake, Iowa. He is survived by 19 great-grandchildren, and one on the way.
Visitation for Barney will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 3, 2018 at Howard Funeral Home, with an open meeting at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday Oct. 4, 2018 at First Christian Church in Boonville. Burial will follow in the St. Johns Cemetery in Billingsville.
Memorials suggested to the Boonville Scholarship Fund via the Valley Hope Foundation PO Box 59, Norton, Kansas 67654. Online condolences may be left on Barney's Online Guestbook.
